AMD Interview Recap
AMD recently confirmed in an interview with Tom's Hardware that their upcoming gaming GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture will not be targeting the enthusiast graphics segment. Instead, they will focus on gaining market share in the PC gaming graphics market by competing with NVIDIA in key mainstream and performance segments. This strategy is similar to what they did with the Radeon RX 5000 series based on the original RDNA architecture.
Jack Huynh, the head of AMD's Computing and Graphics Business Group, emphasized the importance of building scale and capturing a larger market share. He mentioned that their priority is to reach 40 to 50 percent of the market faster, rather than focusing on the high-end enthusiast segment. Huynh highlighted the need to offer gaming systems at affordable price points to cater to millions of users.
While AMD may consider targeting the flagship market in the future, their current focus is on building scale and attracting developers to optimize for AMD products. The decision to withdraw from the enthusiast segment is driven by the low volumes and high costs associated with building such GPUs.
AMD's strategy with RDNA 4 includes improving ray tracing performance, raster performance, and efficiency to gain market share in the performance segment. The company believes that by offering products with the right performance-to-price ratio, they can increase their market share.
