Earlier this week, there were rumors circulating about AMD's upcoming release of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. This 8-core/16-thread "Zen 5" processor is expected to feature 3D V-cache and is set to debut in late October. The 9800X3D will follow the popular 7800X3D model, and AMD is likely aiming to have a competitive gaming processor ready for Intel's Core Ultra 2-series "Arrow Lake-S" launch. In a previous report, it was mentioned that the higher core-count 9000X3D series processors, including the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D, are scheduled to be released in Q1 2025. These new models are said to come with certain "new features" compared to their predecessors, the 7950X3D and 7900X3D. Speculation was also made about the possibility of both 8-core CCDs on the processor having 3D V-cache, and it seems that this is indeed the direction AMD is heading towards.
A recent report from Benchlife.info suggests that the 9950X3D and 9900X3D processors will feature 3D V-cache on both CCD chiplets, providing a total of 192 MB of L3 cache (96 MB per CCD), and 208 MB or 204 MB of "total cache" (L2+L3). Additionally, it is reported that AMD is working on a Ryzen 5 9600X3D chip, which will be their second attempt at competing with Intel's Core i5 lineup. This comes after the recent release of the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, which fell slightly short (1-3%) of the Core i5-14600K in gaming performance. It is unclear whether the 9600X3D will be launched alongside the 9800X3D in October or if it will be part of the Q1-2025 release with the Ryzen 9 9000X3D series. The addition of 3D V-cache on both CCDs of the 9950X3D and 9900X3D processors could be significant, as it will allow for consistent gaming performance across both chiplets. Previously, the OS scheduler-level QoS logic on the 7950X3D and 7900X3D ensured that gaming workloads were directed to the CCD with 3D V-cache, while multithreaded productivity tasks were spread across both CCDs.
